The AERO SL: faster, lighter, stiffer
The numerous test victories in recent years confirm our continuous development work. Building on this foundation, we embarked on the AERO SL project. In addition to feedback from the riders of our BENOTTI Berthold professional team, customer feedback was of course also incorporated into further development. All parameters were analyzed, resulting in the AERO SL – optimized in carbon layup, aerodynamics, and weight, complemented by a new cockpit unit and seatpost.
The frame is made from T1000 carbon with additional high-modulus fibers and weighs approximately 950 grams in a medium frame size. It is designed exclusively for electronic shifting systems.
The ax-lightness AXAC2 cockpit has been redesigned and made even more aerodynamic. It features a short reach of 77 mm and a compact drop of 130 mm. In addition, the handlebar curvature has been harmoniously shaped to ensure effortless access to the brake/shift levers from all hand positions.
Full integration of cables and hoses, along with the newly designed aerofoil-shaped top bar, offers minimal frontal area to the wind. The revised construction provides even greater comfort when riding on the tops compared to its predecessor. It also allows the forearms to be supported similarly to aero bars, enabling an especially aerodynamic riding position.
The handlebar is supplied with a system-specific computer mount compatible with all common manufacturers.
The results of these developments impress not only in simulations, but also very convincingly on the road. The bike stands out with even higher bottom bracket and head tube stiffness than before. In sprints, it delivers eager acceleration, and downhill it remains direct and controlled, even through tight corners. Thanks to the optimized frame geometry and aerodynamics, it maintains excellent stability in challenging wind conditions.
Through further optimization of the carbon layup, we were able to significantly reduce the weight of the frameset (frame, fork, handlebar, seatpost, and headset approx. 2200 grams), benefiting the overall weight of the bike.
Comfort characteristics have also been further improved. The attached seat stays have been aerodynamically optimized and, through slight changes in the layup, provide improved flex. The bulbous fork minimizes air turbulence between fork and wheel and, together with the rear end, allows tire clearance of up to 35 mm. This makes the AERO SL ideally suited for comfort-oriented riders as well as for epic long rides.
